The B.Sc. in Perfusion Technology is a specialized allied health programme designed to prepare competent clinical perfusionists for advanced cardiac care settings. The curriculum integrates core health sciences with focused training in cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal life support systems, providing students with a strong academic and clinical foundation in cardiovascular sciences.
Students gain comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, hemodynamic, pharmacology, pathology and critical care principles. The programme emphasizes both theoretical learning and hands-on clinical training in operating theatres and cardiac care units.
Graduates are trained in the selection, operation and management of advanced extracorporeal circulation equipment, including: Cardiopulmonary bypass (heart–lung) machines, Artificial heart systems, Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), Ventricular assist devices (VADs), Blood conservation and transfusion systems
The course also focuses on real-time intraoperative monitoring and patient management during cardiac and thoracic surgeries. Students develop competencies in maintaining adequate perfusion, oxygenation and hemodynamic stability, as well as administering blood products and medications in accordance with surgical and anaesthetic protocols.
Upon completion, graduates are equipped to function effectively as key members of multidisciplinary cardiac surgical teams, ensuring safe physiological support and optimal patient outcomes during complex cardiovascular procedures.
